Are refugees authorized to work in the United States?
Yes they are.
Refugees are authorized to work upon arrival in the U.S. They receive their Employment Authorization Document from the Department of Homeland Security shortly after arriving in the U.S.
Can refugees speak English?
Some refugees arrive in the U.S. knowing how to speak English fluently. Others are eager to learn and utilize our daily ESL classes to help improve their language and comprehension skills. Many refugees speak numerous languages, showing their skill and capacity to learn another language.
What is a refugee?
“A refugee is someone who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality or habitual residence, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.” (UNHCR, 2009, p.13)
Through the U.S.’ resettlement program, refugees are resettled in cities across the country.
